My name is Andrew Lanigan, I live in Acton, Massachusetts and currently work at Stow Acres Country Club in Stow, Massachusetts. This past summer I completed my first internship focusing on Turfgrass Management and Golf Course Maintenance. Recently I was asked to stay on with the staff through the winter as part of the management team and was subsequently promoted to the position of crew foreman and spray-technician for this coming season.
My long-term goal is to not only become a GCSAA Certified Golf Course Superintendent but to also further myself as a writer through publications. I love everything about turf and I am always looking to further my knowledge of the industry. My short-term goals for this season are to take part in continuing education programs online, participate in the educational seminars at this years national and regional turf conferences which I will be attending and also to obtain my commercial applicator pesticides license.
Without the support of the management team at Stow Acres, specifically Superintendent Jason VanBuskirk, none of this would have been possible. As a teacher, mentor and boss he gave me the opportunity to grow as a turf professional and provided me with the tools to succeed. For the past year, along with my own blog, I have been contributing with him on the Stow Acres Turf Blog which has been an amazing experience.
I am a huge fan of social media and how it plays a roll in how we obtain and communicate new information within the turfgrass industry. My goal for the last year has been to create a voice for students and entry level turf managers within the industry so that those who are interested can understand the experiences and challenges involved in succeeding while working your way through the various career stages of a turf manager.
The turf industry is one that is consistently evolving in terms of communication and information and if I could help enlighten young turf professionals like myself I would consider it one of my greatest achievements. There is a wealth of information and knowledge to be gained and by making it easier to obtain that information we can insure a brighter future for our industry.
